If you have 4 days, you can also visit some of the famous Belgian war sites. Belgium is a year round destination and because most landmarks are located in the cities, you can visit at any time of the year. For the best weather, come between April and September. In summer, Belgium hosts lots of festivals and events. From mid-November until January, you can visit Belgian Christmas markets. For that, Brussels is probably the best place to stay. Alternatively, Antwerp or Ghent are also well located for exploring the main cities in Belgium.
If you decide to stay in Brussels, we recommend staying close to the Central Station. That way, you can easily make day trips to other destinations in Belgium. Yes, Belgium is absolutely worth visiting!

If you are interested in war history, Belgium has some interesting war sites, especially around Ypres and Bastogne. Belgium has a reputation for being a rainy country. How difficult is it to score a Westvleteren 12 in Brussels or Antwerp? Alternatively, you can take the metro line 2, 3, or 15 to Groenplaats. Flanders mostly has busy roads and larger metro areas vs vast countryside, so renting a car is usually not a convenient option for visiting Belgian cities.
Both Antwerp and Ghent have an excellent network of trams, buses, and underground metro. As mentioned, Ghent is also very walkable. Compared to Antwerp, Ghent s a lot smaller and more compact and can be visited mostly on foot. Thus, Ghent may be a better choice to stay in for a very short break e. Antwerp is a port city, not as quaint as Ghent. The Antwerp main square has the most guild houses in Europe.
To some travelers, Antwerp can feel a bit shady after dark — its special atmosphere is the setting for Zone Stad, the most popular Flemish crime TV drama. However, Antwerp is as safe as other European cities of its size — avoid the red-light district, train stations, and drug-related areas at night. Thus, some travelers see Ghent as a good middle option between Bruges and Antwerp — less touristy than the former, more scenic than the latter.
It has a gorgeous cathedral, pretty canals, and pleasant strolls. Travelers generally agree Ghent is much more picturesque than Antwerp. Antwerp, however, has more sights and activities than both Ghent and Bruges, and by far the best shopping opportunities of the three — some even say of all Belgium. As mentioned before, Antwerp has a lot to see and do, including an attractive old center with cobblestoned streets and nice squares, great historical and modern architecture, impressive museums, and scenic river walks.

In the old town, the Grote Markt central square and the Stadhuis City Hall building are beautiful examples of Renaissance architecture with Flemish and Italian influences. Or should we split them into two different dates Tuesday afternoon Ghent, Wednesday full day in Bruges, Thursday in Antwerp.
Main consideration would be accessibility to key sites and transportation hubs, as well as safety and cost for lodging. Our interests include trying out new food, going to fresh markets and flea markets, seeing historical sites, walking around unique cultural neighborhoods to mention a few. We don't mindseeing art but not too much that it becomes the focal point of our trips.
Or shall we just streamline and scrap Ghent so we could have a full day in Bruges and more time in Antwerp?
Wednesday you could do citytrip to Brugge or Gent. And then Thursday you can relax in Antwerpen before the long bus trip to Munich. Antwerp Centrum is not really huge and very easy walkable.
So as long as you stay in the Central area between let us say the Central Station and river Schelde you have easy access to the interesting places and also to public transport. A second thought I have right now is if it would be better to us to stay in Bruges for two nights and just visit Antwerp for a day trip?
