Should i loosen my cello strings
Yes, I should have been clearer. As I understood it, if you're not going to use your violin for awhile, say "long term" storage, then the practice was to loosen the strings. I think the suggestion came up because summer vacation no school was coming up. Simon, where are you?

Maybe you just need to finally clean the oil and dust from under the strings. In any case, it might just be worth bringing your strings to an instrument tech or luthier to have them do some additional work on the instrument, and let them put the new strings on when they are done.
