Ofsted why colleges fail

And, to be fair, the overwhelming majority of universities inspected so far have been rated good or better. But make no mistake: the experience of universities moving into apprenticeships thus far has by no means being straightforward in all cases. I suspect that this is an issue worth keeping a close eye on. It only takes a moment and you'll get access to more news, plus courses, jobs and teaching resources tailored to you.

Online safety expert Holly Powell Jones tells Tes what action teachers should take. Give us adequate funding, focus on quality GCSE delivery in schools, provide sufficient funding to support the rising number of learners entering fe with social, emotional and mental health needs.

Stop blaming fe for the failure of entry level learners and focus more on the quality and suitability of the curriculum those learners have received at school. Perhaps Sir Michael would like to take over as Principal of a failing FE college and show everyone how easy it is?

Not much chance of that. Perhaps the problem is with the young people we get, not the FE colleges! Many — are very immature — have little desire to really learn.

It is very disappointing that the great and good do not seem to see the reality of the near bankrupt FE system and the nature of many students who attend. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to point out to Sir Michael that an apprentice is an employee paid by a company, not a pupil at a school or a student on a full time college course.

Ofsted claims grades are wanted by parents, but where is the evidence? We asked Ofsted and there is none. There is no educational justification for reducing the complexity of a school or college to a single grade, and overwhelming evidence that it causes harm. We appeal to the chief inspector to transform Ofsted into a force for genuine improvement by dropping the grades. Anyone teaching in universities has also seen the appalling fallout — students less able to think critically and exercise their own learning autonomy, having been fed on a relentless diet of narrow, unimaginative test-driven teaching and the examination, and the accompanying tyranny of being governed by numbers.

The only way to reverse this malaise is to replace Ofsted with a supportive inspectorate that empowers, rather than punishes, bullies and publicly humiliates. Well, Ofsted? What have you got to say for yourself? Speak up. You mean to tell me that, throughout the last 28 years, instead of assessing schools for the quality of their teaching, staff dedication and competence, you have merely focused on exam results?
